Adria Airways

Adria Airways started its life as a charter airline that went by the name of INEX Adria in what used to be Yugoslavia. After the country broke up into smaller, independent state, the airline’s name was changed to Adria Airways and it set up base in Ljubljana and became the flag carrier of Slovenia.

Adria Airways was a member of the STAR Alliance – first as a regional partner and then later on as a full member. However, like many state-run airlines operating out of small countries, Adria’s participation in the STAR Alliance was not enough to ward off increased competition from the low-cost carriers. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to sell off Adria to private investors.

Eventually though, in September 2019 Adria Airways filed for bankruptcy, securing its place in the history book of the casualties of European deregulation.
