The Mythenzimmer Guest House in Rickenbach, SZ

Introduction

The Mythen is a mountain range in the Alps that sits in the Hinterland of Brunnen on Lake Lucerne in Canton Schwyz. The greater Mythen is easily recognizable by its distinctive shape, as it stands detached from the surrounding mountains.

The Mythenzimmer Guest House

I’m staying at the Mythenzimmer Guest House in Rickenbach, which is a small village that belongs, politically, to Schwyz Commune. Hotels are not so easy to find in Rickenbach, or in Schwyz for that matter, which is why, eventually, I settle on the guest house.

The Mythenzimmer is located at the end of a long cul de sac that sits on a hill above Schwyz. From the dining room you can even see as far as Brunnen and the lake.

The Mythenzimmer is a very well kept guest house that is maintained with a lot of attention to detail and care. The finishings of the place are nicely done and it has a warm, welcoming feel to it. For example, as you enter, there is a shoe tray where guests can deposit their heavy hiking boots in favour of a pair of complimentary slippers that are incredibly soft and warm.

On the ground floor is a small living room area with a television. Small snacks and alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

On the other side of the room is the dining area where breakfast is served. The breakfast is included in the room rate. It’s a very nice spread and features regional specialities and home made preserves.

The guest house only has three rooms. One on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The rooms are basic, but they’re very well maintained and very clean. Apparently, the guest house opened three years ago, which explains why everything looks new.

The room on the ground floor and the room I’m in on the first floor face toward the greater Mythen, which sits right outside the window and looks quite imposing- when it isn’t shrouded in a heavy cloak of clouds.

What is also important to note, is that every room has an en suite bathroom with toilet and shower, which is also in pristine condition and very clean.

Conclusion

I very much enjoyed my stay at the Mythenzimmer Guest House. The land lady was charming and friendly and went out of her way to make guests feel welcome. The only thing I don’t know, is what it’s like staying there in the summer. Even on the north side of the Alps, the temperatures in the summer can get very warm, and being right under the ceiling might make the rooms hot and stifling. Guess I’ll just have to go back there in the summer and find out for myself!
