The Excellent Sofitel Bayerpost Hotel at München Hauptbahnhof

The Sofitel Bayerpost gets its name from its location in what used to be the old main post office building of Munich. The hotel is just off to the side of the station, about two minutes on foot.

The main railway station is currently in the middle of a major remodelling and reconstruction, which is probably a good thing, because right now it’s just a very big and dirty hovel.

The general impression of the Sofitel is that while it’s starting to get on a bit, it’s obviously a very well maintained hotel. It’s not that it’s starting to look worn or anything, it’s just that the style seems a bit outdated.

The staff I interact with during my stay are all friendly and very helpful. There are two dining areas on the ground floor. On the front side of the hotel, facing the station, is Délice, the à la carte restaurant. Facing out towards the back of the hotel is the breakfast room.

The buffet breakfast is excellent. The Sofitel seems to be very popular with the Arabs, which is why there’s a nice selection of Arab inspired dishes. Other than that, you also get all time Bavarian classics like the Weisswürst with mustard.

The hotel also has an extensive spa area with a very large pool.

I’m staying in a junior suite overlooking the square in front of the station. The layout of the room is slightly odd, presumably because it’s a corner room: you enter into a long corridor.

Off to the left is the bathroom, with a separate bath and shower. The shower is nothing short of stupendous, with a good volume and pressure. More importantly, you don’t end up flooding the bathroom when you shower.

Off to the right is a small alcove to hang jackets.

The living room area is a bit cluttered, in the sense that there’s a lot of furniture.

There is also a desk…

… and a dresser with a tea boiler and a Nespresso machine. The hotel provides complimentary still water.

My only complaint about the room is that the bed is just a bit too soft for my back. But that’s more my issue than the hotel’s.

In summary, I rather enjoyed my stay here at the Sofitel Bayerpost. The location of the hotel is great, because of its proximity to the station. The old town and shopping are not far off either. The area around the station is not necessarily the nicest part of town. But you could probably say that for most European cities.
