  1. My dear William, if you think Austrian is the LH Group’s problem child and VIE is a mess, you should try flying Brussels Airlines out of BRU…or maybe not, as I would be worried you wouldn’t cope.

Let’s start with the insane mess that is BRU (also currently under construction/renovation): passengers are dropped off several hundred metres from the terminal (outdoors, with little cover, in Europe’s rainiest capital), then all converge on a single set of lifts and escalators to be ejected upstairs into the dark and dingy check-in hall. Then they all have to backtrack to pass through security, then down some stairs, then up some stairs…well you get the picture. And on arrival, baggage claim is literally at the other end of the terminal from the Schengen pier – allow at least a 20 minute walk (and be prepared to go down some stairs, then up some stairs, etc.). And there is also a “pop up” lounge (down in a dank dark corner of the cellar (“down some stairs/up some stairs”) at the moment…with space for no more than 40 people…

As for poor old SN…despite some great crew members, they are working with ancient planes and a management team that cannot decide if it’s a LCC or a full-service airline. All, this in the “capital of Europe”. Really, the entire LH operation is a bit of sh*t-show compared with Air France, and even the BA-IB combinat, which is definitely improving.

As always, love your reports and wishing you happy travels! Kind regards, Gorm

    1. Hey Gorm,

Thanks for that. It brought back fond memories of when I worked for Swissair. Sounds like the craptastic SN/BRU Airport combo hasn’t moved an inch since then. You’re probably right, I likely wouldn’t handle it well. And then usually people get offended…

But what are they doing exactly? The overground link to the Schengen pier isn’t that old. Are they extending the pier on the other side?

  2. What a bewildering trip you’re having!

Also, I realise this is a little infantile but it says “ASS” on the side of that A339 haha

    1. Fortunately, things improved dramatically after the Austrian extravaganza.

As for the chunky Scandinavian Ass, it belongs to an operator called Sunclass, which, strangely, I’ve only ever seen in Cyprus.

      1. There is such an incredible variety of traffic in Europe. Here in Australian the airlines we get are positively pedestrian.

      2. Sunclass used to be Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia. Once Thomas Cook went under, investers invested in the remains of the airline and renamed it Sunclass.

  3. Entirely agree with your conclusion. I go out of my way to avoid OS (and VIE). I normally have the option to choose between LX, LH and OS to many destinations and that’s the order I rank them

    1. That sounds about right. Although it’ll be interesting to see what will happen in Zürich once they start tearing down the A pier. Hopefully, it won’t mean too many disruptions for passengers.

  4. Austrian didn’t have the most exciting lounges to begin with. Will there be an improvement after the renovations? Who knows, but given what a mess Lufthansa group has been lately, the odds are not in it’s favor.

At this point it seems like Lufthansa Group as a whole – and for many of it’s individual airlines – needs new leadership.

    1. Well, the new lounge will be over several floors. So, if nothing else, there should at least be more room at the lounges in Vienna.

Right now it seems that Lufthansa is on this drive to consolidate and centralize more power and responsibility in Frankfurt, and that is causing a lot of upheaval. Add to that the fact that navel gazing seems to be the group management’s favourite pastime, and it doesn’t look like the mess is about to clean up any time soon.
