When I visited the Blue Mountains a year ago, I stopped at the Conservation Hut Café for tea and scones. That’s where I found out that they also do a full hight tea service, however that needs to be ordered at least three days in advance, so that’s what I’m doing today.
Location
The Conservation Hut Café sits on the edge of the hiking trails along the ridge overlooking the valley near Wentworth Falls. From the Fairmont Blue Mountains Resort to the Conservation Hut Café it’s about one hour on foot through the forest.

The Service & Staff
The staff at the Conservation Hut Café are friendly. Especially the waitress who has been assigned to our table is hilarious. She’s from Peru, and just a very funny person. We’ve been given a table right by the window and with a lovely view of the forest. We’re seated right next to the hearth, where they have a nice fire going.

Afternoon Tea at the Conservation Hut Café
The menu for the afternoon tea has a small selection of teas. Today I’m not in the mood for a black tea, so I decide to try the lemongrass and ginger instead, which is rather nice.

The afternoon tea is served with the savouries and the sweets on a two-tier étagère. The scones and some more sweets are served on a separate plate. The entire meal is brought out at the same time. The scones are fresh out of the oven.

For the savouries there are two pinwheels with cucumber, dill, and salmon. There’s also lobster and prawn slider, and a ham and cheese croissant. The lobster and prawn slider is definitely my favourite. It has something slightly spicy in the mayo, probably paprika.

The scones are still warm when we start with them. I like that they’re served with cream and fresh strawberries, not just strawberry jam.

I think what I like the most about this afternoon tea is the sweets, which is unusual for me. Apart from the fact that they’re very nice, they’re also rather unusual. Normally, afternoon tea sweets tend to be small, dainty bite sized little things, but not here. The sweets are rather substantial and what I would describe as comfort food.

Conclusion – Afternoon Tea at the Conservation Hut Café
It’s a good thing I returned to the Blue Mountains this years. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss this. The afternoon tea at the Conservation Hut Café is very nice. The atmosphere inside is welcoming and warm, and the food is hearty and well prepared. One thing I’ve noticed about Australia is that in general, people tend to be up earlier in the day than in Europe. As a result, outside the cities shops and restaurants generally close much sooner too. The Conservation Hut Café closes at 15h00, which is why we had to book the afternoon tea fairly early, for 13h00.
